Although I didn't know it at the time, this project started with a remix of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" that I did well over a year ago at this point. I ended up receiving so much positive feedback on it, and it got so many more downloads than anything else I've made available online, that I decided, "Hey, why not do a whole EP of material like this?"

This is the result. A remaster of the "Superstition" remix along with four new remixes of essential disco, funk, and 80s artists. They include "Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant, "Once In A Lifetime" by The Talking Heads, "Shake" by The Gap Band, and "Sunshine Hotel" by Richard T. Bear.

The best part? It's available as a free download for you and all your friends here: http://bit.ly/gnasx7. So what are you waiting for? Go get it and be sure to share the link with your friends too!!

Fuck 2010: The Jazzmutant Lemur & 1200 are discontinued....

Well, that's right gentle readers. The day of reckoning that I said would never come has in fact landed right on our fucking doorstep. Resident Advisor (a website I respect even though they don't answer support emails {fuckers]) broke with an update on the status of the Technics 1200s as the cornerstone of DJ life as we know it. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

Ok maybe not, but according to the very short and seemingly in-denial attitude of RA, crucial part shortages are to blame. My favorite quote: "We cannot help discontinuing production in advance in order to avoid the worst case scenario." WHAT IS THE FUCKING WORST CASE SCENARIO? You stop making the turntable that was the cornerstone of the entire DJ culture or that any new 1200s will be sentient Transformers and rise up to enslave humanity? I don't fucking think so. We have THE TECHNO VIKING!

If anyone can save us (mostly me) its the Techno Viking! Wait though.... this. can't be? I thought this was the year of multitouch was coming to save our lives? I thought I would be burning my mixer & 1200s (fuck that old bullshit!) and DJing on sleek touchscreens?

Nope. After 5 years of being the most forward thinking (and one of the most expensive) tools in the modern musicians arsenal, the Jazzmutant Lemur is being discontinued. The Lemur is essentially at 10" touchscreen that was in the public's hands before the iPhone was even a glint in Steve Job's eye. Basicallly a user, and the rather large community behind it can program insane physics based touchscreen systems and use them as MIDI or OSC controllers. Maybe you've seen these guys. See that thing they're tapping in the video? Yup, it a Lemur. And I bet because they are both French, it was free!

The Lemur is insane. Its so far ahead of its time. Its fully customizable. It has its own processor and can accept WAY more inputs than a shitty iPad. Well, fuck it its dead too...... Can somebody just keep making the same shit, or at least make it better! The funny thing about the Lemur is that I can't find any AWESOME videos of it in action. Its just weird science nerds and You Tube creepers trying to show it off and failing. Well, that and these guys called THE MOTHER FUCKING GLITCH MOB.

See usually WMC is the 3rd week of March and it ends with this horrible ULTRA Music festival. 3 days of long lines, over priced water bottles and standing out in the sun. As you may have picked up, I'm not the biggest fan. Just the other day the official WMC group announced that the conference (which nobody really goes to anyway) will start on March 8th. ULTRA (a totally different group) then announces that they aren't moving and will be on the 3rd weekend in March. This seriously fucks things up.

Everyone counts on WMC being that week especially the DJs, label heads, and industry types that have already made arrangements to rent clubs, sound systems, plane tickets, and all the other shit that goes into this. So now what? Do you change your plans and go on the new dates, or do you keep things where they are. WMC is a conference. There are workshops, meet & greets, Q&As, all that shit. However 99% of people that go to Miami aren't really there for that, they are there to party. I made a couple of phone calls last night and everyone is fucking confused. Jonn Hawley says he's going the second week, fuck ULTRA. Sleazy McQueen says its on for the second week. See where I'm starting to go with this? So which is it gentle reader? When will you go to Miami this year, or better yet fuck both of em and go to DEMF?

I Have Blood On My Hands...
What is RIGHT here, right in front of you, and also over there --> O.o is a remix I did of Deadmau5's "SOFI Needs A Ladder". Yes, OK, I did it for one of those remix competitions and now I'm about to ask for your help by going and "spinning" it, but where else am I supposed to get good stems?! Anyway, here's my plea:

1) Go to Beatportal. When you get there you should see something like this:

2) In order to "spin" (that's Beatportalese for "vote for") my remix you need to create an account and log in. I know it's a bit of a pain but it's just so they can make sure you don't vote 50 times (as much as I'd love you to). Please sign up and log in? You know I'd do it for you! Hell, you should already have a Beatport account anyway, just use that info. If not, here's how...

3) Up at the top right there's a box to Sign In/Register. Click "Register" (unless you already have a Beatport account as previously mentioned, in that case just sign in). This will give you a pop-up with a link to register on Beatport. At beatport enter your name, email address, a username and password, and click the "Agree to terms and conditions" box, and then click register.

4) Go check your email account you used to sign up and follow the confirmation link that beatport sends you. OK!! Now you can go vote, er "spin".

5) Go back to the link in step (1), use the log-on info you just created, and now instead of "Log in" in the picture above, you'll see "Spin it!" Just click that and you've helped do your part to launch me on my way to DJ superstardom (or something like that).

That's it. Also, you might as well listen to my mix while you're there, but note that just playing my track won't register as a spin (vote). Thanks everybody! I'll be getting a new podcast up here soon too, so stay tuned!!

(If your child is a freaking electrical engineer from Japan)

gulp.... When DJs started complaining that one of my CDJs was acting funny I simply brushed them off and told them to take better care of their CDs. I try to take ridiculous care of my DJ gear and there was NO FUCKING WAY my CDJ was busted! Besides it had never happ.....whoa. What was that? Why did the whole track just slow down? Wait, its fine. I must have... Shit. There it is again....

It took about six months of subtle hints before that finally happened and I realized the problem was real. Now, I have a serious problem with America's "throw it away" mentality, but when its cheaper and quicker to buy a new toaster than it is to repair one the argument is a loss. This however is a $1000 piece of kit. I could have sent it out and waited 3 weeks and paid probably $200 to repair it. Luckily for me I used to work for Apple and repair laptops. I'm not scared of electronics. So what you should do if your expensive DJ gear breaks and needs a repair? Hit the intertubes and do some homework!

First rule of electronics home repair: Radio Shack is your friend. To work on a CDJ, Technics 1200, laptop, or a mixer your going to need some screwdrivers. I suggest these: Radio Shack 20-Piece Electronics Bit-Driver Set. Best $16 you'll spend in a while. I've had mine for several years and use em at least once every 2 months. You can see 'em in the pic to the left.

Next you need a service manual. These aren't so easy to find and I actually had to pay $8 for the CDJ-1000s. Luckily, its not copywritten, so I posted it on Scribd. Download the CDJ-1000 Service Manual here for free! You will need it not only to disassemble the unit, but also to order the parts you need. A lot of the manual is dedicated to testing the electronic components. Don't bother with that and just figure out which part you need and do a full replacement.

Next, you need the parts. This was also not easy. I found 1200s.com and they were very helpful. Jason had at first try to send me used parts to save a couple of bucks, but they were for an mk3 and not a 2 so they didn't fit. Its VERY important you get the service manual first so that you order the right stuff. Don't just call them up and say I need a new "this". Give them the part numbers. If you can't get the thing to work, call them back and schedule a repair. They are in Brooklyn, so New Yorkers are in mad luck!

Now, get a sleeve of the small dixie cups that your grandmother has in her bathroom, print a hard copy of your service manual, and start your disassembly. Label each cup with a sharpie on where the parts came from. A lot of screws may look the same, but aren't. You can also use zip-lock bags, but whatever. To help you can jot down notes in the service manual to help you. It'll take about an hour to take the whole unit apart the first time so that you can get to every piece. By the time you do the repair and get ready to put it back together you'll never remember everything. Be patient, thorough, and diligent. This isn't that easy, but you can do it! Also, be very careful dealing with the ribbon cables as they are fragile. Thats about all I have for you except good luck! The feeling of accomplishment after you succeed is amazing.

The Sounds of Now on WRPI.
1) Download a .cdr image here.

2) control-click or right-click on the image and select OpenWith->Disk Utility.

3) Once Disk Utility opens. Highlight the image and hit the Burn button in the menu bar.

4) Once its burned make sure its an Audio CD and play it back. You should hear the control tones as if you hooked Traktor up wrong. VIOLA! You're done.

****PLEASE NOTE: This will only work if you already own Traktor. This isn't the program itself or anything hacked. Its just a backup of the audio files that let you go wicka-wick-wack with a CDJ. Don't email us asking for help. This is as much as you'll get.****

Lazer & Blazer: Lounge at Daisy Bakers
