Hustle & Flow with Properly Chilled @ Quintessence!

Wow, that's a hell of a title! I was also thinking of calling this write-up, "What a ton of people decided to do after the Lotus show". Around 2am the sleepy little diner that doesn't sleep on Saturday nights got a sudden 30 person boost, which was unfortunate for them. They didn't get to experience Properly Chilled! But why don't I start at the, um..., start.

I got to Quintessence (11 New Scotland Ave in Albany) right at 10pm. There weren't a lot of people there yet, but Albany is a late night crowd. Brandon (Properly Chilled) was warming everything up and I use that phrase because when he got off the whole place was en fuego! He's an amazing DJ that appeals to everyone including the guy that, I thought, was an undercover cop. He was by himself, not drinking, and paying no attention to the hot chicks Brandon had whipped into a jiggiling frenzy on the dancefloor. Make sure to stop by his site www.properlychilled.com

If you knew what House Music was in 2006, you no doubt heard Hustle & Flow's "Life". It got crushed by every major DJ ever. Brian Anderson & Ryan Kick released some other music together, but none of it had the signature saxaphone and hot house vocal work like this. They pull from all areas of the music: jackin, tech, deep, etc. They brought nothin but prime rib with extra sizzle. Which made the arrival of the next wave of fans that much sweeter. The whole vibe of the music changed with the whole vibe of the place. I didn't get home till 5am We had to stay until the end and not because they borrowed my gear, but because it was that sick.

Special thanks to Lazer & Blazer, Brandon, & Ryan. This is their night and they threw on he'll of a party. If you have pics from the show, email or send them to our Dropbox (over on the right there) so we can share them.

Whatever you do don't let those fucking DJs think they're real musicians!!

So this week an arts & music newspaper called The Metroland had their "Local Music" issue.  They had a form on their website that allowed you to submit your act, so I took it upon myself to submit the names of some of the collective like Lazer & Blazer, Ryan Kick, Properly Chilled, Jay Travis, and more.

  Well, the fucking issue came out and guess what?  None of us were in it.  The Metroland and other Capital District outlets really don't take us seriously.  I'm not sure I understand why, this is what we do....

I mean, why not include us?  We perform on stage, live and in front of a crowd?  People pay us to do it!  Ok, that last part was a lie, they pay us in beer. But they still pay us something! Well I was a bit bitter that they left us out so I sent the following letter to the editors.  Wow, I'm getting old....

Basically though, DJs and Electronic Musicians are treated like rockstars all over the world.  For fuck's sake, Tiesto opened the god damned Olympics!  But a couple of DJs want to be listed with people who use real instruments and we get left out.  Anyways, I just wanted to share.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the Editors of The Metroland:
   My name is Scooby Carolan and I am a DJ who moved to Albany in 2001.  For the past eight years I and several dozen other local DJs have been ignored by your publication which covers the local music scene.  In 2003 I called your offices to promote a show I was producing at Northern Lights and was told flat out that you "don't cover DJs".  Well, in the time since then the non-relevant DJs that you don't cover have performed on every single stage in every single bar and club in Albany, Schenectady, Troy and further.  We have entertained thousands of fans, released original records, been featured on local radio, brought world class electronic artists to your stages and yet when we submit our names to your free local music guide we do not get listed.
  Maybe you don't understand us.  Maybe you don't believe in us.  The local clubs we play at like The Red Square, Savannahs, Jillians, Quintessence and others all believe in us and understand us.  The fans that drive from Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, Burlington, and further believe in us as do the promoters that book us to play in Toronto, Manhattan, and Boston to name a few.  Yet our local art & music newspaper leaves us in the cold in our own home.
   Well we're here, right here in the Capital District.  Maybe you don't know what kind of music Tech House or Balaeric is, but we do.  We are the people that make music, pack clubs & bars full of fans, and live in an area where the most read arts & music newspaper acts like we don't exist.  We'll keep submitting our names and shows to try and be included, but in the end we've gotten this far on our own.  Isn't it about time you recognize that the Capital District has a thriving Electronic Music scene and start covering it the same way you do local bands?
Sincerly,
  Scooby Carolan
