Do you know who Jack Beats are? No? WTF is wrong with you? I mean honestly, come on now... Fine, here, meet your new Gods:
All HailSome call it Fidget House, some Electro House, I call it "I just danced my ass off for an hour straight with my hands in the air and an "O" face the entire time and WHY in the name of all that is sacred and holy can't their set go on forever?!"
Seriously, these guys completely blew me away. For those of you who know me, that should mean something. For those of you who don't, here's a little "about me": I can be bit of a snob, particularly when it comes to DJs... and beer, and these days it takes a good bit to impress me (on either front). Sure, I was totally psyched to go to T5 on Saturday night and knew I liked what Jack Beats productions I had heard, but I was in no way prepared for the aural awesomeness these two were about to unleash on me.
In the company of Rusko, Major Lazer, and Crookers, Beni G and Plus One Completely stole the show. As the first ones out of the gate (after the warm-up DJ) they set the bar high, and honestly no one else that night quite managed to match it. Shame for everyone else.
"So what the hell was so great about them?" you're wondering by this point (if you're still not, you should be, I promise). Well, the three things that make up any good DJ set. 1) Track selection and set sequencing. They were absolutely spot-fucking-on. They didn't wear me out, but they also never let me down, somehow managing to keep the energy level absolutely perfect for their entire hour. I don't know about you, but I find that to be rare. 2) They were using turntables *GASP*. Four of them, with two mixers *GASP-GASP*. With so many performers moving in the Ableton direction (don't get me wrong, that can be cool too), it was really great to see a couple guys with some Technics (or maybe Numarks) and CDJs who were clearly masters of their mediums. That alone gained them some instant respect from this die-hard. 3) They were clearly having fun and enjoying what they were doing, and shit, isn't that kind of the point of all this anyway? That can be the number one most important thing a DJ can do at a show, and it almost always rubs off on the crowd in a big way.
Unfortunately for you, they haven't recorded a lot of mixes, or almost any actually. The one I've been able to find is here and I'm not sure I feel it does justice to what I witnessed the other night. Personally I'm hoping Pete Tong will get his act together and have them on for an Essential Mix in the near future, after all they are from the UK. In the mean time keep an eye or three out for them, and if you get the chance go see them.
